Transfer Student Information

For those of you who were not able to attend Transfer Admit Day 2007, you can find our presentation here.

Course Preparation

The Economics Department highly recommends, but does not require, that the following lower-division courses be completed prior to transfer:

  • Economics Majors: Econ 1, 3, Math 10A-B-C (Math 20A-B-C is recommended)
  • Management Science Majors: Econ 1, 3, 4, and Math 20A-B-C and 20F

  • Joint Math-Econ Majors: Econ 1, 3, and Math 20A-B-C-D and 20F

General Information on Transferring

STEP 1: Print your major requirements checklist from here.

  • Please note that there are many changes to the Economics program which will begin in Fall 2007, and will change our requirements for incoming freshmen only.

  • We are not holding the FA07 incoming transfer students to these new requirements; we will honor the requirements that were in place when you entered your community college. This means that your major requirements will not be found in the 2007-08 general catalog; instead you can find your major requirements for the Economics major on our website listed under the Program Requirements web page.

  • Transfer students entering UCSD in FA09 and later will be held to the new requirements.

STEP 2: Check www.assist.org, the official source for California articulation and student transfer information.  You will find out how your lower division courses transfer. Check them off on the checklist. Click here for Math Department transfer equivalencies if you can't find what you are looking for on Assist. If you have any questions regarding how your math courses transfer, please check with the UCSD Math Advising Office.

AP Exam Info: Because no high school economics course provides the kind of background needed for upper-division economics and management science, the department is strict on allowance of credits. Only scores of 5 will exempt students from lower-division microeconomics and macroeconomics in meeting major and minor requirements.

Score of 5 on AP Micro = Econ 1 (formerly numbered 1A)
Score of 5 on AP Macro = Econ 3 (formerly numbered 1B)

STEP 3: Print the transfer two-year plan for your major. These plans are based on the fact that all lower division requirements for the majors have been completed (with the exception of Econ 2 which can only be taken at UCSD). If this is not the case, then be prepared to complete the remaining lower division requirements before starting the upper division core requirements. If you've taken one year (two semesters) of calculus already, you may find to your chagrin that the courses only transfer to UCSD as two quarters worth. Therefore, you have to take one more calc class in your first quarter at UCSD. Why? Because Math 10A-B-C or 20A-B-C are prerequisites for all upper division major core classes in the Economics Department. And prerequisites are enforced.

So then what do you take in your first quarter at UCSD if you have to finish your calc? Depending on which courses are being offered, you may be able to take upper division Econ electives towards fulfillment of your electives requirements. Check the Schedule and course prerequisites to find out what electives you are eligible to take.

STEP 4: Enjoy your first quarter at UCSD. In the middle of the quarter you will have to be ready to register for the next quarter's classes.

Transfer Student Two-Year Plans

Please note that these plans assume that all lower-division requirements for the major (except for Econ 2) are complete.
