Campus parking with transportation to and from the SAIC facility provided "The International Currency and Financial Crisis" Stanley Fischer First Deputy Managing Director, International Monetary Fund Dr. Stanley Fischer is one of the world’s leading academic economists and one of its principal economic policy makers. He is the author of several leading economic textbooks and of over 100 articles in professional economic journals. After getting his Ph.D. in economics at MIT he served on the faculty at the University of Chicago, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and then returned to MIT, serving as professor of economics and head of the Economics Department. He was chief economist at the World Bank in the late 1980s. Dr. Fischer joined the International Monetary Fund as deputy managing director in 1994. From that position he has led the successful financial reform of Mexico and the ongoing financial reforms of several Asian countries. Takeover specialist Sam Zell (known as the "grave-dancer") is the flamboyant Chicago deal-maker who has amassed a nearly billion dollar fortune by bottom feeding on distressed real estate properties. Serving as chairman to various corporations including Great American Management and Investment, Inc., Manufactured Home Communities and American Class Voyages as well as director of Fred Meyer, Inc., and Chart House Enterprises. Mr. Zell also serves as chairman of the Board of Trustees for Equity Residential Properties, the largest apartment real estate investment trust in the Unites States and Equity Office Properties, the largest office portfolio of any publicly traded, full-service office company in the United States. Mr. Zell currently serves as chairman of the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT), and is a generous supporter of the University of Michigan where he established the Zell/Lurie Entrepreneurial Award Program, an innovative attempt to fund entrepreneurial awareness and sensitivity. Lyon President and CEO, Public Policy Institute of California Dr. Lyon is the founding president and CEO of the Public Policy Institute of California, a research institute devoted to public policy issues facing Californians. Prior to assuming this challenge, Dr. Lyon was vice president and corporate officer at RAND in Santa Monica, CA. With his 23 years at RAND he oversaw a broad range of domestic policy studies such as criminal justice, education, health, regulation, civil justice, labor and population and urban justice. Dr. Lyon received his Ph.D. in city and regional planning from the University of California, Berkeley. He is a member of the Advisory Committee of the Asia Society/Southern California Center, the Pacific Council on International Policy, and the Council on Foreign Relations. He co-edited Urban America: Policy Choices for Los Angeles and the Nation and has authored numerous essays including "A Walk Through Fukugawa" and "California Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: Learning from Eastcoastia." 7:30 - 9:00 a.m. Continental Breakfast, UCSD Faculty Club, University of California, San Diego "Climate Policy for Global Warming: Credible Early Action" Raymond Kopp Senior Fellow, Resources for the Future Raymond Kopp Dr. Kopp has been a Senior Fellow at Resources for the Future since 1977. His research interests include climate change policy, nonmarket valuation, tax system interactions with environmental policy, and technology and innovation in environmental protection.
